BANGALORE, APRIL 26. Lakshman Rau Nagar and Neelasandra slums, which witnessed violence on Sunday night, were peaceful on Monday. The police had stepped up vigil in the area by deploying additional forces. Lakshman Rau Nagar is under the Adugodi police station limits, and Neelasanadra under the Ashoknagar police station limits. A bridge over a drain separates the two slums which have a large number of Muslims and Tamil-speaking Christians. Lakshman Rau Nagar slum, spread over 1.50 hectares, is the biggest slum in the State. The Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central), S. Parashiva Murthy, and the Deputy Commissioner of Police (South), Ramasubba, under whose jurisdiction the two slums are situated, told The Hindu that the cause of violence was yet to be ascertained. Dr. Murthy said the violence was not because of any communal dispute. Seventeen huts were destroyed in the fire, and a person who was hit by a teargas shell suffered a severe injury, he added. Mr. Ramasubba said the police had arrested three people in connection with the violence. After the slum dwellers indulged in stone throwing and set huts on fire on Sunday night, the police resorted to a lathi-charge and lobbed teargas shells. On Monday, people were seen salvaging their belongings from the damaged huts.
