By Gargi Parsai
NEW DELHI,
APRIL 27.
The Central Government has urged the newly constituted Krishna Water Disputes Tribunal to become functional soon. The Ministry of Water Resources has asked the Law Ministry to make a formal request to this effect to the tribunal. The formation of the tribunal was notified on April 2.
It was constituted under Section 3 of the Inter-State Water Disputes Act, after the Centre received complaints from the riparian States of Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Karnataka on the sharing of waters of the Krishna river.
A sitting judge of the Supreme Court, Brijesh Kumar, has been appointed the chairman of the tribunal. A judge of the Allahabad High Court, S.P. Srivastava, and another of the Kolkata High Court, D.K. Seth, shall be the members. In its first sitting, the tribunal shall formulate the terms of reference on the issue.
It has been given three years to come out with its report.
