This Day That Age
An exhibition of 18th century South Indian paintings, collected by Warren Hastings, the first British Governor-General of India, was opened on April 26 at the Royal Empire Society in London by the Chairman of the Council of the Society, Sir Lancelot Graham. The paintings were acquired by Warren Hastings between 1769 and 1772 when he was stationed in Madras. Each of them shows a male and female figure of a certain trade or caste and is an example of the Indian art which was commissioned by Europeans of the time to represent Indian life and customs.
