Letters to the Editor
Sir, Arundhati Roy, the philosopher in the making, has expounded the existing social predicament in the article, "How deep shall we dig?" (April 25). It is incumbent on us to evolve a system that has a decisive power over the insensitive ruling establishment. Though this is easier said than done, it is imperative that responsible and effective efforts are channelled in this direction.
Kasim Sait,
* * * Sir, Ms. Roy's fight for social justice should be applauded but her interpretation of the so-called "police killing" in Muthanga is not justifiable. Her article says that the police fired at unarmed people staging peaceful demonstrations. At Muthanga, the Adivasis attacked police personnel with bow and arrow and one policeman was killed in the incident. The Adivasis' claim to land is their birthright but violence is not the solution.
K. Justin,
* * * Sir, Ms. Roy's approach is completely negative. She appears to be the modern version of Catherine Mayo whose book, Mother India, was described by Mahatma Gandhi as a drain inspector's report. We need people who change this nation with patience and love.
Ravee Nerur,
