Thackeray's remark

Sir, — Bal Thackeray's reference to Congressmen as a bunch of eunuchs in the presence of the Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, only shows that decency and decorum have touched the lowest ebb in politics. The editorial, "Curb the Thackeray itch" (April 26), says that the political fight should be in terms of policies, principles, programmes and priorities. The policy of all the parties is to come to power at any cost; the principle, to go to any extent to attack the Opposition candidates personally; and the priority is to make quick money.

T.S. Padmanabhan,

Sir, — You are right when you point out the helplessness of Mr. Vajpayee, who is seen as a symbol of decency even by his political opponents. It is astonishing to note that on the one hand, every NDA partner is using Mr. Vajpayee as a symbol of India shining and, on the other, does things that reduce his stature to that of a helpless man seeing the worst happening before his eyes.

Sir, — Almost all politicians practise the pernicious philosophy that `ends justify the means.' The utterances of leaders such as Mr. Thackeray and Narendra Modi would put even Bollywood villains to shame. Perhaps our Prime Minister has thought it fit to emulate the proverbial `three monkeys' (see no evil, hear no evil and speak no evil).

Sir, — The editorial is timely. The DMK cadre in Tamil Nadu should also refrain from making indecent and obscene references to the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa.

Sir, — Mr. Thackeray has called Congressmen a bunch of eunuchs. Eunuchs are creations of nature and there is nothing derogatory about them. In fact, even Arjuna of Mahabharata led the life of a eunuch at one point of time.

M. Narayanan,
Chennai
