Diabetes cases to rise sharply

By Sridhar Krishnaswami

Washington: Even if obesity rates remain stable, diabetes rates will double worldwide by 2030 to 366 million people getting the disease, a team of international researchers has found. And this rate is expected to go up if more and more people become overweight, eat a Western diet and go without exercise. "The total number of people with diabetes is projected to rise from 171 million in 2000 to 366 million in 2030", the team has written in the latest issue of Diabetes Care which is published by the American Diabetes Association. The study, reported in the media here, was done by Sarah Wild of the University of Edinburgh in Britain along with colleagues from Australia, Denmark and Switzerland. The research was on type 2 diabetes from around the world and was based on United Nations data to project the future situation based on current trends. The greatest increases are expected to occur in the West Asia crescent, sub-Saharan Africa and India. In the United States, currently there are 16 million persons with type-2 diabetes and this is projected to rise to 29 millions by 2050.
