KOCHI, APRIL 27. The former Union Minister and long-time chairman of the Central Khadi Commission, A. M. Thomas, died at Pallimukku in Kochi early this morning. He was 92. Mr. Thomas had the unique distinction of being a Minister in the Cabinets of Jawaharlal Nehru, Lal Bahadur Sastri and Indira Gandhi. He was a member of the Kochi Assembly and also Speaker of the Travancore-Kochi Legislative Assembly. He won the elections to the first Lok Sabha in 1952 from the Ernakulam constituency. He was selected by Jawaharlal Nehru to represent Kerala in the Union Cabinet and was a Deputy Minister for Food and Agriculture during his second term in the lower house of Parliament. During his third term, he held the Defence portfolio as a Minister of State under Lal Bahadur Sastri and Indira Gandhi. Later, he held the post of High Commissioner to Australia, High Commissioner to Zambia and Botswana. He is survived by nine children.
