PUDUKOTTAI, APRIL 27. Under the Total Sanitation Programme, the district administration has planned to establish production centre-cum-sanitary marts in this district. In the first phase, the marts would come up in the following eight out of 13 blocks in the district at the rate of one per each block: Annavasal, Aranthangi, Arimalam, Gandarvakottai, Kunnandarkoil, Pudukottai, Thiruvarangulam and Thirumayam. Official sources said 24,000 individual toilets were constructed in the last two years out of a total 1.21 lakh toilets targeted for the district under the TSP. Apart from producing hollow blocks and doors for the toilets, the centres would mobilise masons and ensure timely completion of toilets for the beneficiaries. The sources told The Hindu that each centre, to come up on 2,000 square feet area, would be run by a recognised non-governmental organisation and manned by members of self-help groups. Initially, the District Rural Development Agency would provide a sum of Rs. 2 lakhs for each centre. Of this, Rs. 50,000 would be used to procure machinery for manufacturing hollow blocks and the rest would be used as corpus fund for the production of other materials. Every production centre would cater to 10 villages. The SHG members as well as the social mobiliser attached to each centre would create an awareness of sanitation among the rural people and explain the role of production centres. Three designs of cost-effective toilets Rs. 850-model, Rs. 1,500-model and Rs. 2,500-model would be displayed in each production centre to enable the beneficiaries choose the model of their choice.
