KOPPAL, APRIL 27. Gastroenteritis has claimed five lives in the past 15 days in Koppal taluk. According to reports, Koppal town, Bisaralli, Gingera, Handral, Pyati, Talakankapura, and Alwandi have been reeling under drinking water scarcity. This has forced people to drink contaminated water resulting in the outbreak of gastroenteritis. With the death of Laxmi at Pyati on Sunday, the number of deaths caused by gastroenteritis has gone up to five. The names of three of the other four victims had been given as Basawanneppa of Bisaralli, Hanumanthappa of Handral, and Jannusab of Koppal. The Tungabhadra and the Hirehalla nalla are two major sources that supply drinking water to Koppal. But the town had to go without water for the past 10 days as the rising main from the two sources had been damaged. The water supply is likely to be resumed soon. Meanwhile, people in the affected villages have to travel miles from their villages to fetch a pot of water. This forced them to consume infected water from the tanks in the surroundings. Sources in the district hospital said that everyday about 100 patients, a majority of them from Koppal with complaints of stomach disorders were treated as outpatients. About 60 patients with symptoms of gastroenteritis had been admitted at the hospital. Of these, the condition of five was said to be serious. There is a long-pending proposal before the Government to increase number of beds in the hospital to 250.
