Diehard optimists

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD, APRIL 27. In the sweeping victories by the Congress in 1989 and the Telugu Desam Party in 1994, a large number of first-timers managed to enter the State Assembly.

This year, 15 Congress candidates, who lost in 1994 and 1999 are trying their luck, hoping to cash in on the supposedly anti-incumbency factor working against the N. Chandrababu Naidu Government.

Among them are K. Appalaswamy (Bhogapuram constituency) and C. Damodar Raja Narasimha (Andole-SC) who lost in 1994, 1998 and 1999. Narasimha had won in 1989 and lost a by-election in 1998.

Of the 15 candidates, T. Rama Reddy (Anaparthi), Pilli Subashchandra Bose (Ramachandrapuram), P.Viswaroop (Mummidivaram-SC), Pitani Satyanarayana (Penugonda), Kottu Satyanarayana (Tadepalligudem), Koneru Ranga Rao (Thiruvur-SC), B. Vedavyas (Malleswaram), J. Raghava Rao (Addanki), M. Mahender Reddy (Kandukur), K.Vishnuvardhan Reddy (Allur), K. Narayanaswamy (Satyavedu-SC), Keshav Reddy (Yemmiganur), C. Narsi Reddy (Makthal), J. Geeta Reddy (Gajwel-SC), Mohd. Ali Shabbir (Kamareddy) and G. Mukunda Reddy (Peddapalli), who lost in 1994 and 1999 have entered the fray this time. Kamatam Ram Reddy of the Congress, who was defeated in the last two elections, was in the fray as a rebel candidate for the Pargi seat.

Five women nominees of the Congress who emerged victorious in 1999 — N. Rajyalakshmi (Venkatagiri), G. Kuthuhalamma (Vepanjeri-SC), G. Aruna Kumari (Chandragiri), V. Sunitha Reddy (Narsapur) and Konda Surekha (Sayampet) have been renominated in the 2004 elections.

They were among the 26 women candidates who failed to make it to the Assembly in the last poll battle.

Madhuraveni who lost in 1999 by a narrow margin of 203 votes to A. Chandrasekhar in Vikarabad (SC) joined the TDP and was nominated.

Her candidature seems to have come in handy after Dr. Chandrasekhar deserted the TDP and joined the Telangana Rashtra Samiti, after the ruling party refused to re-nominate him.

He has been winning the seat since 1985 and was a Minister in Chandrababu Naidu Cabinet.
