Entrance test for residential junior colleges on May 2

HYDERABAD: The entrance test for the AP Residential Junior Colleges will be held at all the district headquarters from 10 a.m. to 12.30 p.m on May 2. Hall tickets have already been dispatched and those who do not receive them by April 30 can approach the District Educational Officer concerned on May 1 with application number, acknowledgement card and two passport photographs attested.

Suspected sorcerer murdered

ADILABAD: Sutari Mallaiah alias Mallanna, 65 of Pata Yellapur in Khanapur mandal, was axed to death allegedly by another villager, Alishetty Bakkanna, on Monday evening, suspecting him to be a sorcerer.

According to the Nirmal DSP, Vidyasagar Rao, Alishetty Bakkanna, 37, of the same village had been suffering from ill-health for the last three years. He suspected Mallanna to be responsible for his bad health. He contended that he had shaken hands with Mallanna three years ago. His health began deteriorating because of the spell cast by Mallanna, he said.

The Khanapur police registered a case. Bakkanna surrendered to the police on Tuesday morning.

Congress activist injured in clash dies

ONGOLE: The Congress activist, Gilanee Basha (48) who was critically injured in clashes between Telugu Desam Party and Congress workers in connection with polling in Kandukur yesterday died in a hospital in Nellore on Monday evening. His body was handed over to his relatives after the conduct of autopsy at the Government Hospital, Kandukur. The body was taken in a procession by Congress workers.

Bandh was observed in the town in protest against the alleged attack by ruling party workers resulting in the death of Gilanee and injuries to three others. CPI and the CPI(M) functionaries also participated in the bandh.

The situation in Kandukur which was tense yesterday is under control.

Congress leader stabbed to death

CUDDAPAH: A civil contractor and Congress leader, Jangamreddy Lakshmi Reddy (54), was stabbed to death in Sanjeevareddy Nagar Colony in Rayachoti town last night.

According to the police, one Charankumar Reddy of Lakkireddipalle, who was in an inebriated condition, allegedly stabbed Lakshmi Reddy thrice and fled. The Congressman succumbed on way to Rayachoti Government hospital. The Rayachoti Urban police registered a case.

The former Rayachoti MLA, M. Narayana Reddy, the Sambepalle mandal president, M. Narsa Reddy, and the Congress leaders, S. Jayachandra Reddy, S. Nagi Reddy, M. Ramprasad Reddy and Jayarami Reddy condoled the death.

TDP, Congress activists go on rampage

CUDDAPAH: Telugu Desam Party and Congress functionaries ransacked the houses of each other and set ablaze three vehicles in Gandlur village of Kondapuram mandal in Jammalamadugu Assembly constituency last night.

Three Congressmen, Nagi Reddy, Balaramudu and Balaraju Yadav, suffered injuries when TDP men allegedly attacked the former with stones, according to the police. Subsequently, Congressmen ransacked the TDP office, damaged a liquor shop belonging to a TDP activist and set his jeep and two scooters on fire. The Kondapuram sub-inspector, Ravi Kumar, registered cases.

Yudhvir Foundation award for poet

Hyderabad: The 13th Yudhvir Memorial award is to be presented to Hyderabad-based artist and poet Narendra Rai Srivastava on April 30 at the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan Auditorium.

Announcing the decision here on Tuesday, Narendra Luther, Chairman of the Yudhvir Foundation, said that well-known art historian, Jagdish Mittal, would present the award and preside over the function.

Mr. Rai has participated in several All India art exhibitions, as well as the National Exhibition of Art in New Delhi and been presented various awards for his paintings.

Mr. Rai is also an accomplished Sitar player and presently teaches Art in Keshav Memorial Boys High School in the city.

The Foundation was set up to commemorate the ideas and work of late Yudhvir, the founding editor of Hindi Milap. It honours those who have contributed to national integration and social service through its annual award which carries citation and a cash award of Rs. 25,000.

The award was presented to Pandit Jasraj last year.

Annamacharya fete from May 5

TIRUPATI: The TTD has made elaborate arrangements to conduct the 596th Annamacharya Jayanthi (birth anniversary) for three days starting May 5 simultaneously in Tirupati (at Annamacharya kalamandiram and Tiruchanur Asthana Mandapam) and Tallapaka (Cuddapah dt.), the birthplace of the saint-poet.

Annamacharya, a Telugu composer who lived in the 15th century during the reign of Saluva Narasimharaya of the Vijayanagara dynasty, composed 32,000 songs, but only 12,000 are available. After being preserved for over four centuries in Sankeerthana Bhandara, they were transferred to the TTD. A procession of the idol of Annamayya and the deity of Lord Venkateswara will be taken from TTD administrative building to Annamacharya Kalamandiram here on the first day.

Expelled from Congress

HYDERABAD: G.B.Shyam Rao, former chairman of the SC Department, Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee, has been expelled from the primary membership of the party for his "anti-party activities" , the APCC general secretary, K. Yadava Reddy, announced on Tuesday.

Rain in north coastal Andhra

Hyderabad: here was rain at a few places in north coastal Andhra and in Kurnool district of Rayalaseema on Tuesday. Weather was mainly dry in Telangana and dry in south coastal Andhra and rest of Rayalaseema.

Chodavaram recorded a rainfall of 3 cm, Anakapalli 2 cm and Yellamanchili, Paderu and Holagunda 1 cm each.

The highest day temperature during the 24-hour period ending this morning was recorded by Nizamabad at 42 degrees C. According to a forecast valid for Wednesday, there will be light to moderate rain at a few places in Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam and East Godavari districts and isolated rain in Telangana and Rayalaseema.

Rasta roko staged

CUDDAPAH: A group of people staged a rasta roko near the Porumamilla bus stand for an hour on Tuesday demanding the arrest of the driver of the APSRTC bus, which ran over a 14-year-old boy, K. Nagarjuna. The bus, which came out of the bus stand, ran over Nagarjuna who was going on a bicycle killing him instantly. The Badvel-bound bus proceeded without stopping and this enraged the relatives of the deceased and some local people, who took up the protest.

Award presented

TIRUPATI: The National Environmental Science Academy, New Delhi, has presented the "Environmentalist of the year award-2003'' to Md. Hafeez, professor of parasitology, at the ANGRAU College of Veterinary Sciences here for his contributions to veterinary parasitology. The award was presented to him at the inaugural of the XVII annual conference of the academy held at New Delhi recently.

Vidyaranya College fest

WARANGAL: The three-day annual day celebrations of the Vidyaranya Government College of Music and Dance began here on Monday. The programme featured `Gananayaka' keertan followed by `Nadaloludi' in Kalyanaragam of Thyagaraya and `Rama nannu brovara' in Harikamboji ragam. J. Srinivasa Murthy played violin solo with N. Nageswara Rao on mridangam. The music lovers of the town were treated by V. Dayasagar with his Hindustani vocal with V. Jayakanth on tabla. The programme ended with a Kuchipudi dance by the K. Padmaja and her troupe.

Assumes charge

WARANGAL: T. Upender Reddy has assumed charge as Zonal Manager of Andhra Bank, Warangal zone, on Monday. The zone comprises three districts - Warangal, Khammam and Nalgonda-- with a network of 65 branches. Mr. Upender Reddy joined the bank in 1975 as rural development officer and held various positions.

TRS foundation day celebrated

ADILABAD. Upbeat Telangana Rashtra Samiti cadre celebrated the party's third foundation day in a big way here

on Tuesday. The district-level leaders left for Hyderabad to attend the celebrations in the capital. Many activists made a beeline for the BGR Gardens function hall for a luncheon, hosted by the Adilabad TRS unit led by A. Santosh Reddy.

Speaking to the gathering, Mr. Santosh Reddy expressed hope that TRS candidates would win in four Assembly and Adilabad Lok Sabha seat. TRS

has fielded candidates at Mudhole, Boath (ST), Khanapur (ST) and Asifabad (SC) Assembly segments. The Congress candidates would also emerge victorious, he added. G. Karunakar Reddy, election agent to TRS lok Sabha candidate T. Madhusudan Reddy, attributed the party's good show to a wave in favour of TRS.

36 houses gutted

NALGONDA. As many as 36 huts were destroyed in a fire mishap in Poliathada of Chandampet mandal on Monday night here. According to sources, property worth Rs. 12 lakhs was damaged in the fire, which was soon put out by the locals. No casualties were reported. The remote habitation is located about 70 kilometres from the Devarakonda revenue division. The tribals were rendered homeless following the mishap.
