Not to campaign against Vajpayee
By Our Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI,
APRIL 27.
Despite being locked in a keen fight, the Congress has decided to continue with the "political nicety'' of party leaders not campaigning against each other.
As a result, the Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, will keep away from the Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee's constituency, Lucknow, during her campaign tour of Uttar Pradesh.
Already, Ms. Gandhi has touched base with Lucknow several times in recent weeks on the way to her constituency, Rae Bareli, but not once has she campaigned in the State capital. Though she is slated to campaign in the adjoining constituency of Mohanlalganj for the recent recruit from the Samajwadi Party, Reena Chaudhury, on Wednesday, Ms. Gandhi will again give Lucknow the miss.
This, according to party sources, should not be interpreted as the Congress conceding Lucknow where it is anyway only supporting the candidature of independent candidate and criminal lawyer, Ram Jethmalani.
The party, insiders said, has decided to post two middle-level leaders, Mukul Wasnik and Subodh Kant Sahay, in Lucknow to manage its campaign there in support of Mr. Jethmalani.
The two have apparently convened meetings of the District Congress Committees and other frontal organisations of the party to mobilise its network in support of Mr. Jethmalani. This apart, the Congress is hopeful of Ms. Gandhi's Mohanlalganj campaign having a spillover effect on Lucknow.
