`PM must apologise for sari stampede'

KANPUR, APRIL 27. Rajya Sabha member, Shabana Azmi, today demanded that Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, apologise to the nation for the sari stampede incident in Lucknow that claimed 22 lives.

Talking to mediapersons here, Ms. Azmi said neither the PM nor the BJP could disown responsibility for the tragedy since the programme was planned by the party to woo voters. ``BJP flags and banners had been put up at the venue where free saris were being distributed during the birthday function of the BJP leader, Lalji Tandon,'' she said.

Since Mr. Tandon was the ``chief convenor of the PM, he could not disown responsibility.'' This was a violation of the model code of conduct as the programme was organised without seeking permission from the Chief Election Commission, she added. — UNI
