CHENNAI, APRIL 27. A city-based hospital, Dr. V. Seshiah Diabetes Care and Research Institute, proposes to start a club for people with diabetes to provide them a forum to share their experiences on managing the condition. The patients would be encouraged to form groups and meet once a month to discuss various facets of diabetes management. This would enable them to share their experiences and thereby educate each other, said V. Balaji, consultant and course director. The "self-help group programme" was inaugurated recently by the Speaker, K. Kalimuthu. The patients' self-help group and a `diabetes care providers' recognition programme for doctors would constitute a two-pronged approach to management of the disease. The first batch of the doctors would be trained from July for a year and their performance be evaluated by national and international faculty, said Madhuri Balaji, Managing Director of the Institute. Releasing a handbook on diabetes edited by V. Seshiah, Chairman of the Institute, Mr. Kalimuthu said the book would be a useful reference material for doctors. Sam G.P. Moses, diabetologist, gave away certificates to physicians who attended a continuing medical education programme organised by the Institute on Sunday. S.P. Thyagarajan, Vice-Chancellor, Madras University, said studies indicated that the number of diabetes cases in a State could be correlated to the literacy rate there. Dr. Seshiah presented a cheque for Rs. 10,000 to Dr. Thyagarajan towards the Senate House Renovation Fund.
