Rain in Madurai, Virudhunagar

MADURAI, APRIL 27. A heavy downpour brought cheer to the people in Madurai and Virudhunagar districts last night. A sudden dip in the mercury level and a significant inflow of 532 cusecs into the Periyar dam, highest in recent times, were the immediate benefits.

Madurai Airport recorded the highest rainfall of 50.4 mm, followed by Melur 50 mm in Madurai district. Srivilliputtur with 39 mm and Rajapalayam with 38 mm were the major beneficiaries.

Though heavy showers started late in the evening in Rajapalayam and in Srivilliputtur a little later, Madurai city received showers only after midnight. The rainfall, accompanied by lightning and thunder, gave the city residents a respite from the sweltering heat. While the maximum temperature dropped only by 2.5 degree Celsius from 38.8 degree Celsius registered yesterday, the minimum temperature touched a new low during the season. It came down drastically to 20.9 degree Celsius today from yesterday's 27.4 degree Celsius.

The water level in the Periyar reservoir, which remained static at 108.5 feet, got an additional storage of 46 mcft in the last 24 hours, with the level going up to 108.9 feet. Vaigai dam also got an inflow of 16 cusecs and the level stood at 23.06 feet. The combined Periyar credit was 826 mcft.

The rainfall registered in various places (in mm): Tekkadi - 35, Thaniyamangalam - 34, Vaigai dam - 27, Gudalur - 24, Viraganoor - 19.1, Manjalar Dam and Uthamapalayam - 16, Madurai and Shanmuganadi - 14, Chittampatti - 8.6, Veerapandi - 8, Andipatti - 4, Virudhunagar: Pilavakkal Periyar dam - 16.2 mm, Watrap - 13, Aruppukottai - 7 and Virudhunagar - 6.
