HYDERABAD, APRIL 27. In an interesting development, more men exercised their franchise than women during the second phase of polling yesterday though males outnumbered the former in the actual electoral rolls. This was a uniform pattern in a majority of the 21 Lok Sabha constituencies, barring Narasaraopet and Ongole where more women cast their vote. Out of a total of 2.37 crore electorate, 1.19 crore were women and 1.17 crore men. However, as it turned out, only 83.21 lakh women participated in the voting (69.47 per cent) compared to 87.03 lakh men (71.86 per cent). This trend goes contrary to the popular assumption that women had participated in larger numbers than men in the elections. The Telugu Desam Party has been banking heavily on the support of women since it had extended them several benefits such as 33.3 per cent reservation in jobs and educational institutions.
