BJP plea to EC on deletion of names

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD, APRIL 27. The Bharatiya Janata Party has urged the Election Commission to order a judicial inquiry by a Supreme Court judge into the deletion of the names of " lakhs of voters" from the electoral rolls in Andhra Pradesh, rendering them ineligible to cast franchise in the just concluded elections.

Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, the State BJP president, N. Indrasena Reddy, vice-president, S.V. Seshagiri Rao and general secretary, K. Laxman, have said that the people should be told the reasons behind the large scale deletion and those responsible for it.

Maintaining that the EC owed an explanation for the lapses and alleged that it had "succumbed" to pressure from the Congress and other parties which have made representations alleging enrolment of "bogus voters".
