DAVANGERE, APRIL 28. The elections are over and farmers have returned to their fields. But leaders of various political parties and their supporters are busy consulting astrologers and betting on the results of the elections. Some candidates and their followers, who are anxious about the outcome of the elections, are meeting astrologers, including palm readers and face readers. But the most sought after astrologers seem to be those who predict the future using "Talegari" (palm leaf inscriptions) such as the swamiji of Kidimath near Harnahalli in Hassan. The influence that the astrologers wield over their clients is phenomenal. For instance, one of the candidates who contested the elections is learnt to have altered his house as per the guidelines of his astrologer and Vastu consultant. Right now, it seems that it is the astrologers whose stars have changed for the better. Likewise, many candidates are also said to be consulting priests to know about their "Grahagathi," particularly how favourably the Shani Graha is placed. Many candidates are seen moving around with their horoscopes, consulting priest after priest. Apart from astrology, betting is also fast catching up in the district. What was restricted to cricket matches all these days seems to have been extended to elections as well with people betting from anywhere between Rs. 5,000 to Rs. 10 lakh. It is said that some candidates have been encouraging workers to bet in their favour. Some persons are also learnt to have betted over the number of votes a particular candidate will get in the elections.
