Congress complains to EC on BJP ads in newspapers

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI, APRIL 28 . The Congress today petitioned the Election Commission to take note of the advertisements in newspapers by the BJP containing promises to Muslims. Such "misleading, misguiding, false and lucrative promises to exploit and influence the sentiments of a section of voters" amounted to illegal gratification and bribery, the Congress said and urged the Commission to issue directions to stop the advertisements.

The Congress felt that the advertisement "is fundamentally opposed to the guidelines and the model code of conduct and also a violation of the Representation of the People Act." Also, it discriminated the electors in the name of religion and community. The party spokesman, S. Jaipal Reddy, criticised the Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, for his recent speech in Lucknow. "The Prime Minister seems to be utterly tired, demoralised and confused. He may be tired because of his age and long innings in public life. He may be demoralised because of the persistent reports that the NDA is lagging behind the Congress-led alliance."

Mr. Vajpayee appeared to have forgotten history, Mr. Reddy said and wondered on what basis he accused the Congress of betraying the late Morarji Desai and Jagjivan Ram. "With this frame of mind, he has shown the people that he will not retire until the next Lok Sabha elections. It is for the people to contemplate upon the level of efficiency that the Prime Minister represents now.''
