Tirumala temple to remain closed for lunar eclipse

TIRUPATI: The temple of Lord Venkateswara at Tirumala will remain closed for the `kethugraha khachanna' lunar eclipse which will occur late on the night of May 4. The `mahadwaram' of the temple will be closed at 7.30 a.m. on May 4 in view of the eclipse which will fall between 12.18 a.m. and 03.42 a.m. Rituals like `vasanthothsavam' and `sahasra deepalankarana seva' will be suspended on May 4, while `suprabhatham', `thomala seva' and `archana' will be performed in 'ekantham' (not for public viewing) on May 5. On that day, devotees will not be allowed for `anga pradakshinam', a form of offering prayers by rolling oneself on the floor around the shrine, while `sahasra kalasabhishekam' will be performed, according to a TTD release.

Appointed in-charge for Vijayawada city Congress

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee president, D. Srinivas, has appointed Malladi Vishnu, APCC secretary, as in-charge president of Vijayawada City Congress Committee with immediate effect, according to a press release.

Congress worker succumbs to injuries

CUDDAPAH: A Congress activist, Mahabub Basha (48), who was injured in stone-throwing by rival groups at Bheemalingayapalle village in Mydukur mandal on the polling day, succumbed to his injuries in Kurnool general hospital. Three others injured in the stone-throwing in the village on April 26 are undergoing treatment in Proddatur Government hospital.

DA hike for RTC staff

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation on Wednesday issued orders increasing the dearness allowance at the rate of 1.9 per cent with effect from January 1 this year. The DA hike, which is to benefit about 1.2 lakh employees, will be paid in May/June, according to the APSRTC Transport Mazdoor Sangh.

M. Nageswara Rao, general secretary of the sangh, in a press release thanked the management for timely action. He said arrears, due to RTC workers all over the State from January, would be paid on May 7.

Teachers' meet begins today

HYDERABAD: Discussion on the education bill will be the main item on the agenda at the two-day annual State council meeting of the AP State Teachers' Union beginning on April 29 at the Zilla Parishad High School, Ramachandrapuram (Medak district).

P. Subba Reddy, president, and A. Anantaramulu, general secretary, said in a press release on Wednesday that the discussion was timely as efforts were on to introduce a bill by the Centre on compulsory primary education. The main points of the proposed legislation would be explained to about 500 teachers attending the meeting.

I.V. Subba Rao, Principal Secretary, School Education, will be the chief guest. Manmohan Singh, Commissioner, School Education, Manohar Prasad, State project director of DPAP, former MLCs, A. Shyamsundar Rao and P. Sriramamurthy will be among speakers.

Open schooling exams

HYDERABAD: The secondary examinations of the National Institute of Open Schooling will be held from June 1, 2004 to June 21. The senior secondary examinations will commence from June 1 and will be completed on June 28.

All the examinations will be conducted in the same examination centres as communicated earlier. Separate intimation cards to students are also being sent. Further details can be had on 24060712 and 24162859.

Court suspends GO on temple lands

HYDERABAD: A Division Bench of the High Court, comprising Justice Bilal Nazki and Justice P.S. Narayana, suspended the operation of the Government Order alienating the temple lands at Ponnur in Guntur district through private negotiations.

The Bench was dealing with a writ petition filed by G.R. Reddy, Chairman, Andhra Pradesh Temple Protection Committee. The petitioner complained that valuable land belonging to Bhavannarayana Swamy Temple, Ponnur, is alienated to A.P.NGOs' Association at low price. He said that the judgments of the Supreme Court and High Court deprecated the practice of alienating temple properties through private negotiations.

He alleged that due to this action of the Government in permitting such alienation the deity is bound to lose. The Bench permitted the authorities to conduct public auction while staying the operation of the Government Order.

Seminar on human resource

HYDERABAD: With an objective to seek and establish trends that will guide human resource (HR) principles of the future, a seminar on `Making HR future proof' was organised by the National HRD Network and Monster. The two-day seminar saw several prominent personalities addressing the trends in HR. Santrupt Misra, national president of HRD Network explained key characteristics every HR professional must possess and later fielded questions.

M. Gopalakrishna, of APSFC, explained the customer perspective as the thought leader while Bikramjit Maitra, of Infosys, explained how best practices of evaluation process create an environment where individuals excel.

Ravi Bhootalingam, of Manas Advisory, stressed on the core elements imperative to develop and drive HR. Speakers threw light on various topics like `Living in HR values', `Challenges to HR from outsourcing' and `Knowing Vs Doing'.

Stay on termination orders

HYDERABAD: K.C. Bhanu, Judge of the High Court on Wednesday stayed the operation of removal of 25 employees belonging to A.P. Chapter of Bharat Scouts and Guides. The removal order was passed on the ground that the appointments were not proper.

The petitioners contended that after a long time they cannot be removed like this. The Judge suspended the operation of the orders of the termination while admitting the writ petition.

Isolated rain forecast

Hyderabad: The day temperature in the State rose again on Wednesday particularly in Telangana.

There was a little change in day temperature in coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema. Nizamabad continued to be the hottest place in the State during the 24-hour period ended this morning recording the State's highest temperature of 44 degree Celsius.

There was isolated rain in coastal Andhra and weather was mainly dry in Telangana. Anakapalle experienced one cm rainfall.

According to forecast issued by the State Met Office here, there will be isolated rain in coastal Andhra and Telangana on Thursday. Weather will be mainly dry in Rayalaseema.

Tension in market

NELLORE: Tension prevailed at the main municipal vegetable market, near the old Madras bus stand of Nellore town on Wednesday, after a customer was allegedly attacked by some workers of the market. The customer and his two sons were allegedly manhandled when they asked for a way to leave the premises, following an obstruction. The IVth town police took one person into custody and are investigating.

Bar association election

CUDDAPAH: The Cuddapah Bar Association President, G. Ramalinga Reddy, was re-elected to the post for a second term on Wednesday. Mr. Ramalinga Reddy was elected by a majority of 100 votes over his nearest contender, M. Venkataswamy. A. Sireesha Reddy was elected secretary, beating Gurrappa by 94 votes. The post of bar vice-president was bagged by Mastan Vali defeating Sailendra Babu. K. Srinivasulu was elected treasurer by securing a slender margin of eight votes over Nageswara Rao.

TDP leader no more

CUDDAPAH: The senior TDP leader and former ZP vice-chairman, Mundlapalle Chandrasekhara Reddy (69), died of septicaemia in a corporate hospital in Chennai on Wednesday morning. He suffered fracture of the thigh bone a couple of months and developed septicaemia while undergoing treatment. He is survived by his wife, Arundhatamma (60), son, M. Venkata Siva Reddy, also a TDP leader, and a daughter, M. Usha Rani. Chandrasekhara Reddy began his political career as sarpanch of Mundlapalle in Chennur mandal. He served as ZP vice-chairman in 1974. His body will be cremated at Mundlapalle, his native village, on Thursday.

SI suspended

KARIMNAGAR: The Superintendent of Police, R.S Praveen Kumar, on Wednesday suspended the Kamalapur SI, Jayapapaiah, on the charge of beating a Dalit sarpanch before elections while arresting him in a case.

According to official sources, the SI had allegedly beaten the Dalit sarpanch, E. Ravinder, in Marripalligudem village of the mandal. Besides, there were several complaints against the SI.

Fire at ATM centre

KARIMNAGAR: The ATM centre of Andhra Bank in NTPC, Ramagundam, caught fire accidentally due to electric short circuit on Wednesday. Reports reaching here said that the ATM centre was engulfed in flames. However, timely intervention by locals, who removed the fuse and put off the fire by pouring water, averted the major mishap. When contacted, the Andhra Bank ML Puram Branch Manager, Yugander Sharma, said that the loss was minimal. He said they were taking steps for restoration of the ATM at the earliest.
