Madurai

MADURAI, APRIL 28. The absence of a full-time Controller of Examinations at the Madurai Kamaraj University and the recent leak of question papers have evoked a sharp reaction from the Government. The university was "pulled up" by the Education Secretary for keeping the `sensitive post' vacant for a long time, according to sources in the university. The sources told The Hindu today that the authorities concerned were questioned by the Governor's (Chancellor's) office, the Education Secretary and the Chief Minister's Cell immediately after the leak of question papers on April 19 and sought a detailed report. Subsequently, another six papers leaked. The examinations have been cancelled and rescheduled after preparing a fresh set of question papers. Sources said the Government authorities took a serious view of the situation and reportedly wanted to know why the post was kept vacant for the past three months. The university was told that the Controller had to be a full-time official. The university today initiated the process of finding a suitable candidate for the post of Controller of Examinations and advertisements would be released for recruitment soon. Sources said steps would also be taken to make posts, including Director of Distance Education, on a fulltime basis.
