A new lease of life, says Jogi

Ajit Jogi

MUMBAI, APRIL 29. The former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister, Ajit Jogi, who had suffered a severe injury in an accident recently and underwent an emergency surgery, today expressed thanks to God for his ``new lease of life.''

``A new Ajit Jogi is born today,'' the former Chief Minister, who turned 58 years today, said at a brief birthday party in his private room at the Bombay Hospital and Medical Research Centre.

Mr. Jogi is recovering from a severe spinal injury suffered in an accident while campaigning in the Mahasamund Lok Sabha constituency in Raipur district (Chhattisgarh).

He underwent an emergency surgery at the hospital on April 11.

Lying on his bed, Mr. Jogi barely managed to cut the cake in the hospital room. His wife Dr. Renu, an opthalmologist, and son Amit were present along with the doctors.

A large number of well-wishers from Raipur had turned up to express their solidarity and extend their good wishes on Mr. Jogi's birthday.

``It is by the grace of God I have survived,'' he remarked.

Mr. Jogi, who contested the Lok Sabha elections from the hospital against the former Union Minister, Vidya Charan Shukla (BJP), expressed confidence that he would win.

He thanked the Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, for giving him party nomination from Mahasamund despite the charges of corrupt practices soon after the Assembly elections in December in which the BJP wrested power from the Congress. — UNI
