Letters to the Editor
Sir, Pakistan's decision to downsize its armed forces by 50,000 should be appreciated by all right-thinking people in the SAARC region. India should also reciprocate in practical terms in the emerging new spirit of mutual understanding and accommodation. It is time Indians and Pakistanis freed themselves from the shackles of prejudice and mutual suspicion.
E.P. Menon,
* * * Sir, Pervez Musharraf's decision to downsize the armed forces is a bold and constructive step. No Prime Minister or President before him could take such a bold decision. The move only reiterates that the military rulers of Pakistan have been more friendly towards India than the democratically elected leaders.
S. Rajkumar,
* * * Sir, Pakistan's announcement is obviously a farcical attempt at proving to the international community that it is reducing its troops. In reality, the cuts will reduce the number of orderlies, cooks, personal staff and will in no way affect battle-ready forces. The excellent PR man that he is, Gen. Musharraf's move will no doubt result in the U.S. and other powers putting pressure on India to follow suit.
S. Jagadish,
