WASHINGTON, APRIL 29. A poll shows support for the war in Iraq is down sharply and the approval rating for the U.S. President George W Bush is at an all-time low. The New York Times/CBS New Poll has also found that these have not helped the Democratic aspirant, Senator John Kerry. Americans are about evenly split on whether military action was appropriate 47 per cent have said that the U.S. did the right thing down from 58 per cent a month earlier and 63 per cent felt this way after the capture of Saddam Hussein last December. Forty six per cent of those polled have said that America should have stayed out of Iraq, up from 37 per cent last month. The approval rating of Mr. Bush is at 46 per cent, lowest level in his Presidency. This has to be seen in the context of nearly 90 per cent backing in the aftermath of 9/11 and 71 per cent support last March. What poll mentions in its write up is that the "diminished support for the war" has not translated into any "significant advantage" for Mr. Kerry.
