Pondicherry
By Our Staff Reporter
PONDICHERRY, APRIL 29. A delegation of the Jamaat-E-Islami Hind (Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry) led by its zonal president H. Abdur Raqeeb told a press conference here today that the Jamaat considered the Lok Sabha poll a crucial occasion as voters had to decide whether the country should continue to uphold democratic values or tread the `much dreaded path of communalism and fascism.' The organisation decided to support the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam-led Democratic Progressive Alliance and already a Jamaat delegation held talks with the DMK president, M. Karunanidhi, and pledged its support. The Jamaat's manifesto, released at the press conference, called upon parties to evolve steps to ameliorate people's sufferings and demanded loans without interest. This would help the homeless build houses. The Jamaat stressed that the Prevention of Terrorism Act and other `unjust laws` be repealed and those `victimised under the legislations' released. The Anti-Conversion Act enforced by Tamil Nadu government should be scrapped immediately. Other pleas include government schools in slums, safeguarding the constitutional rights of minority educational institutions and reservation for weaker sections, especially Muslims, in professional and technical educational institutions on the basis of their educational backwardness. It pleaded that all liquor shops closed in Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry. There should be a total prohibition in the two States.
