BJP-Akali Dal blamed for Punjab ills

PATIALA, APRIL 29. Preneet Kaur, Congress candidate for the Patiala Lok Sabha seat and wife of Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh, today said the ``misrule'' of the previous Akali-BJP government has led to the state's poor economic condition.

Campaigning in Ghanour assembly segment under the Patiala constituency, Ms Preneet Kaur said the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and the BJP were responsible for illiteracy and other anomalies in the state. ``Health and education, two of the most primary services, have collapsed due to the rampant corruption during their five-year rule,'' she said.

Listing out the welfare schemes initiated by the Congress government, she appealed to the electorate to cast their vote in favour of the Congress, considering the ``ongoing development'' in the state.

``Be it crusade against corruption or improving infrastructure and revamping institutions like Punjab Public Service Commission, the Congress has tried to bring maximum transparency in the system,'' she said. Criticising her rival candidate Capt Kanwaljit Singh of SAD, she said Mr Singh had left the state exchequer empty during his tenure as the finance minister. -- UNI
