CII-Coimbatore zone to focus on six sectors

By Our Staff Reporter

COIMBATORE, APRIL 29. The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) - Coimbatore zone will take up activities during 2004-2005 to enhance the competitiveness of six sectors that it has identified in this region.

The Chairman of the CII-Coimbatore zone, N. Krishna Samaraj and the Vice-Chairperson, Nandini Rangaswamy, told presspersons here recently that the theme chosen for 2004-2005 was `Competitive Coimbatore - Creating GEMS (Global Excellence in Manufacturing and Services)'. The `GEMS' identified in this zone were textiles, engineering, auto components, education, health care, information technology and information technology enabled services (IT and ITES).

The CII through its services like energy management, total quality management, total cost management and environmental services would help the identified sectors build their internal competencies. These programmes would be taken up through panels that were constituted for each of the identified segments and the five "service panels" formed for areas like quality and production, energy and environment and small and medium scale enterprises.

Mr. Samaraj said that infrastructure development would continue to be the focus this year also.

Further, it was proposed to take up activities for empowerment of women, `clean and green Coimbatore' and linkage between corporate and self help groups (SHGs).

Some of the new initiatives for this year were road shows on CII in places like Salem, Erode, Pollachi and the Nilgiris and enhancing the competitiveness of the industries in a select place through cluster approach.

Ms. Rangaswamy said the CII-Coimbatore zone had 189 companies as members and more than 75 per cent of this membership was from small and medium-scale units.
