Stay on recording voice sample of suspended cop lifted

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, APRIL 29. The Delhi High Court today withdrew the stay on production of the suspended Police Inspector Puran Singh before a trial court for recording his voice sample in the multi-crore Telgi stamp paper scam case.

The High Court had stayed his production before the trial court for recording his voice sample when the accused had moved an application saying that he did not want to undergo the test.

While withdrawing the stay, Justice R.S. Sodhi, clarified that in the recording of the voice sample of the accused, his discretion would prevail, as the trial court had not issued any direction to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for the same.

The trial court had directed the investigating agency that recording of the voice sample of the accused would be done subject to consent of the accused.

In view of the trial court direction, Justice Sodhi said that the investigating agency would record his voice sample as per the trial court direction as well as the provisions under law.

Meanwhile, the Additional Sessions Judge, H.P. Sharma, on April 23 granted bail to Singh when the investigating agency failed to chargesheet him within the sixty days mandatory period for filing a chargesheet in a criminal case.

The CBI had arrested Singh on February 21for allegedly conspiring with the main accused, Abdul Karim Telgi, in printing and sale of counterfeit stamp papers as genuine to business houses causing a huge loss to the exchequer.

The agency alleged that Telgi had allegedly offered the accused a hefty bribe in lieu of his help in his racket of fake stamp papers. Inspector Puran Singh had visited Bangalore on several occasions to meet Telgi. The CBI alleged that the suspended officer had deliberately kept Telgi out of the purview of the investigation.
