SINGAPORE, APRIL 30. As clashes broke out in Jakarta this morning following the re-arrest of a Muslim cleric on charges of terrorism, the authorities said they acted on the basis of `proof' and in accordance with "legal procedures''. Over 40 followers of Abu Bakar Baasyir (Bashir) were arrested following a violent confrontation with the police who used force in the early hours of today. The unrest over the detention of Mr. Baasyir, presumptive leader of a purported terror group in South East Asia, raised the overall temperature across the region as regards an alleged `Islamic' ferment. Thailand is on high alert in the wake of Wednesday's raids on police outposts there and the counter-attack by the security forces. The chief of the Indonesian Police Dai Bachtiar said in Jakarta today that he would "apologise for the early morning clash.'' Mr. Baasyir, who has repeatedly denied sponsoring any religion-based terrorism or political violence, was detained on terror charges.
