Victorious Indian women's team arrives

CHENNAI, APRIL 30. The Indian women's cricket team arrived at the Chennai International airport on Friday, after a successful campaign in Colombo where it lifted the Singer Asia Cup held from April 17 to 29. With Pakistan withdrawing at the last minute, it was left to India and Sri Lanka to fight out the five ODIs. India won all the matches.

Speaking to reporters, India's captain Mamata Maben, attributed the success to "team effort and disciplined bowling performance."

Mamata said though the tour was not as tough as expected, the experience of playing against the Sri Lankan team was wonderful. On the withdrawal of the Pakistan team, Mamata admitted, "it removed a little bit of sheen."

All-rounder Mamata, who was the pick of the Indian bowlers claiming a career-best six for 10 with her medium pace in the fourth ODI at Kandy, said, "our fielding was a disappointment."

Mamata remarked that the real test for the Indian team would come in November this year when Australia comes to India for the One Day Internationals.

Wicket-keeper and opening batsman Anju Jain emerged the `Player of the Series' with scores of 90, 41, 36 not out, and 64. She received 10,000 Sri Lankan rupees.

India won the first match by 123 runs, the second by 105 runs, the third by six wickets, the fourth by 10 wickets and the fifth and final by 94 runs. — Our Sports Reporter
