Call to tap KGF water sources
By Our Staff Reporter
VELLORE,
APRIL 30.
The Akhil Bharath Jala Sangama Andolan (Water Club Movement) has requested the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, to take up a joint project with the Karnataka Government to tap the water source available in the now abandoned Kolar Gold Fields (KGF).
In a letter addressed to the Chief Minister, the chairman, D. Gangappa, said studies conducted by the Jalasangama Andolan a national movement for interlinking rivers revealed that the KGF offered an excellent source of water which would benefit not only the water-starved areas of Kolar, Chittoor and Vellore, but also Chennai city. The quantum of water available in the KGF was estimated to be quite high. Several expert studies have also been made. He suggested that the water drawn from the KGF be pumped to the nearby Bethamangala tank, major source of supply to Palar.
The Andolan learnt that there were more than 16,000 mines in KGF, each having a depth of more than 14,000 feet and running to several kilometres. Though, initially, the water was not considered fit for human consumption owing to the presence of chemicals, now the analysis revealed that the water was good.
