Charge against Antony

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM April 30. The Congress dissident, Cherian Philip, has accused the Chief Minister, A.K. Antony, of using the `poster controversy' to foment communal passion and garner votes in the Lok Sabha poll. In a statement here today, Mr. Philip pointed out that Mr. Antony had not ordered registration of a case in the matter though seven months had lapsed since it was published in violation of the Indian Penal Code and the Representation of People Act. The Chief Minister was showing reluctance to register a case in the matter because he was fully aware that the person behind its publication was a member of his Cabinet, Mr. Philip said.

Admission test for LLB course

The Commissioner for Entrance Examinations (CEE) has invited applications for admission to the Three Year LLB course in the Government Law Colleges in Thiruvananthapuram, Ernakulam, Thrissur and Kozhikode. The admission will be based on an entrance examination to be held at these four centres on June 12. The allotment of seats will be done through a Central Allotment Process. The OMR application forms and prospectus will be issued at the GPO in Thiruvananthapuram and the head post offices in all the other 13 districts. Details are available on the Web site cee-kerala.org. The last date for submitting applications is May 26.

KDF decision by May 6

KOZHIKODE April 30 . The Kerala Dalit Federation (KDF) will hold meetings before May 6, to discuss the decision regarding extending support to the UDF candidates in the Manjeri and Ponnani Lok Sabha constituencies. At a press conference here today, the State president of the KDF, P. Ramabhadran, the general secretary, Boban, and the district president, P.T. Janardhanan, said the district committees would hold meetings with a view to taking a decision on the support to be extended to the respective candidates in the constituencies concerned.

P.C. Thomas moves EC

KOCHI April 30 . The Union Minister of State for Law and Justice and NDA candidate in the Muvattupuzha Lok Sabha constituency, P.C. Thomas, has lodged a complaint with the Election Commission regarding the names of three other contestants appearing in the ballot paper. According to the complaint, three other candidates bearing the name of P.C. Thomas were in fray though their names were different in the voters' list. These candidates allegedly produced some documents to effect the change in names. The changes were made despite objections raised by the Minister's representative before the returning officer, sources said. The complaint has been lodged with the State Chief Electoral Officer also, according to these sources.

Dhanbad Express rescheduled

Train No. 3352 Alleppey-Dhanbad Express scheduled to leave Alappuzha at 6 a.m. on May 1, 2004 has been rescheduled to leave at 10.45 a.m. on the same day owing to the late running of its pairing train, according to a press release issued by Southern Railway.

Plea to extend PSC rank list

The Lower Division Clerk (Various) Rank Holders Association has urged the Government to extend the term of the PSC rank list by two years. This was necessary owing to the long delay in completing administrative formalities in reporting vacancies in the various departments to the PSC. Many departments, the association's functionaries told a news conference, were yet to start the process of determining the vacancies of clerks despite the fact that the rank list was already four months old and only eight months remained.

Engineering student ends life

THRISSUR April 30 . An engineering student hailing from Chiyyaram, near here, reportedly ended his life after consuming poison. The police gave the name of the students as Aneesh, son of Chandran, Valoor Meleppilli house. Aneesh, was a B.Tech student of the Amrutha Engineering College, Paravoor.

Nayanar's health improves

New Delhi April 30. The former Kerala Chief Minister and veteran Marxist leader, E.K. Nayanar, who is under treatment for diabetes and an unhealed ulcer on his left leg, was "fast recovering" at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences here, hospital sources said today. However, he has been put under observation since yesterday as his sugar level showed fluctuation. His family sources said there was relief in the pain from the ulcer, which has started showing symptoms of healing. Cancelling all his election programmes, Mr. Nayanar (86) was flown in here on April 25 for expert treatment. _ UNI

Karunakaran to address meet

KOLLAM April 30. The senior Congress leader, K. Karunakaran, will address an election campaign meeting here in support of the UDF candidate from Kollam, Sooranad Rajasekharan. The meeting will be held at 6 p.m. at Anchalumoodu Junction.

Antony's yatra arriving today

PATHANAMTHITTA April 30. The Navodhana Yatra led by the Chief Minister, A.K. Antony, will tour the district tomorrow. In a statement here today, the UDF district committee chairman, Victor T. Thomas, and the convener, K. Sivadasan Nair, said the Chief Minister would address public meetings at Thiruvalla (9 a.m.), Mallappally (10 a.m.), Pullad (11 a.m.), Ranni (12 noon), Konni (3 p.m.) and at Pathanamthitta (4 p.m.) tomorrow.

BJP to launch women squads

The BJP will launch women squads, `Mahila Samavesh', in all the 843 booths in the Mavelikara Lok Sabha segment, according to an official release issued by the BJP unit here today. The BJP State general secretary, P.P. Mukundan, will inaugurate the squad at a function to be held at Mavelikara tomorrow.

School fete begins

The former Secretary General of the National Human Rights Commission, R.V. Pillai, has inaugurated the golden jubilee celebrations of the Sarvodaya Upper Primary School at Poovathoor, near Aranmula, today. The head of the Malankara Mar Thoma Church, Philipose Mar Chrisostum, delivered the benedictory speech. Swami Samagrananda of the Thiruvalla Sree Ramakrishna Ashram lighted the ceremonial lamp on the occasion. Balan Marukara presided over the function. A session on environment was held later. The Pampa Parirakshana Samithi general secretary, N.K. Sukumaran Nair, K.G. Padmakumar (Kerala Agricultural University) and others addressed the meet.

Electrocuted

PALAKKAD April 30. Two persons, who were working in a vegetable garden at Pallam in Muthalamda panchayat, were electrocuted today when the aluminium bar which they were using to make a `pandal' for vegetables came in touch with the power line passing over the farm. The dead are Mani (65) and Devi (38).

Special loans

KOTTAYAM APRIL 30. The Kottayam District Cooperative Bank (DCB) has designed a special loan scheme to enable effective rainwater harvesting in the district. An amount of up to Rs.50,000 would be made available for construction of ferro cement tanks, ponds, etc. under the scheme. The rainwater harvesting effort is being implemented with the involvement of the panchayati raj institutions and social service societies, in the district. The DCB has also decided to launch an awareness campaign to popularise rainwater harvesting.

Run over

THRISSUR APRIL 30. One person was killed when a scooter knocked him down today near his residence at Kodali, near Chalakkudi. The deceased was identified as Kumaran, son of Kaattuparambil Mani. Even though he was rushed to a private hospital at Chalakkudi, he breathed his last soon after admission, the police said.

Haj pilgrimage rules

KOZHIKODE APRIL 30. The c hairman of the All India Haj Umrah Tour Organisers Association, Alhaj Sainudeen, at a press conference here today informed that registration with the Government of India was compulsory for all private Haj groups. The details are available on the website www.aihutoa.com

Applications invited

Applications have been invited from Government Primary and High School teachers to be deputed and posted as Trainers in the BRCs under the Sarva Siksha Abhiyan project in the district. Interested teachers may apply to the SSA District Project Office in the prescribed format, which is available at the Project office. The applications, duly attested by the School head, should be produced while appearing for the interview at the SSA District Project Office on May 4.
