Errors in entrance test questions?

By Our Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, APRIL 30. A couple of errors in each of the four versions of two questions in the Mathematics paper for the entrance examination in Engineering, held on April 27, have been pointed out by a teacher, N. Gopalakrishnan Nair, of Poojappura in the city.

For Question No. 80 (of Version B1), 120 of B2, 110 of B3 and 40 of Version B4, as well as for question number 87 (B1), 72 (B2), 117 (B3) and 107 (B4), the correct answers had not been provided in the question paper, he pointed out. Further, there were six questions that were out of the syllabus prescribed for the higher secondary course, according to him.

In the answer-keys released yesterday by the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations, a wrong answer had been given for one of the questions, Mr. Nair said. The correct answer to the question with versions B1 90, B2 75, B3 120 and B4 110, had been given as C in the key, whereas it was actually B, he maintained. This error would result in students who had chosen B losing five marks (four to be awarded to the right answer and one mark as negative) and those who had opted for C, as in the key, gaining an undue advantage, he alleged. The matter was being brought to the attention of the Commissioner, he added.

When contacted, C.K.Viswanathan, Commissioner for Entrance Examinations (CEE), said any complaints, supported by adequate proof, would be referred to the panel of experts constituted by the Commissionerate and appropriate action taken.

For the entrance examinations, it was not the syllabus of the higher secondary course that was being followed, but the one prescribed in the prospectus issued to those appearing for the tests, he added.
