Train passenger hurt in freak accident

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, APRIL 30 . A commuter was seriously injured when he accidentally got trapped between a train and the platform while trying to board the Inter City at the Central Railway Station today.

The injured has been identified as C. S. Sasi, an Assistant Manager with Indian Ovserseas Bank, Pacha Palode branch near Nedumangad in the district, hospital sources said.

Mr. Sasi, a native of Edvanakadu, Vypeen in Ernakulam, was subjected to an emergency operation in the Medical College Hospital. The bank officer has fractured his left leg.

The incident occurred when Mr. Sasi was trying to board the 6342 Thiruvananthapuram-Ernakulam Intercity Express, which was scheduled to leave from the central railway station at 4-40 p.m. The friends and the railway police rushed the injured bank officer, who was returning to Ernakulam after duty, to the hospital immediately.

Contractors arrested: As many as 14 contractors, who allegedly gheraoed the District Treasury Officer, following the non-clearance of the cheque issued by the District Panchayat were arrested by the Cantonment Police today. They were let off on bail later in the evening.

Accused surrenders: An accused in Abkari case, Murugan alias Anil Kumar (40) surrendered before the Neyyattinkara court today. Rural police said Murugan was wanted in the case and was absconding for quite some time.

House partially gutted: A thatched house in Subash Nagar, Sreevarahom, was partially gutted in a fire that broke out around 1-30 p.m., Fire and Rescue Services said. The resident of the house, Omana, was not injured in the incident. Two fire tenders from Chacka and Chengalchoola fire station rushed to the spot and doused the flames.
