Car sales up in April

NEW DELHI, MAY 1. Even as Maruti Udyog Ltd, India's biggest carmaker, reported a robust sales surge of 38.4 per cent, Honda Siel Cars India (HSCIL) said it registered an increase of 117.3 per cent in sales in April in comparison to the same month last year. MUL sold 39,838 units in April against 28,793 units in the same month last year. Out of the total number of cars sold in the month under review, the company sold 36,928 units in the domestic market. Exports, however, dipped 7.6 per cent to 2,910 units.

According to an MUL statement, sales of M800, Maruti's bread-and-butter model, grew 3.3 per cent to 11,097 units while Omni van and Versa multi purpose vehicle sales rose 21.2 per cent to 4,816 units.

Sales of compact cars, Alto, WagonR and Zen registered a rise of 99.60 per cent to 19,296 units. MUL sold 1,313 units of mid-size sedan, Esteem and Baleno, a growth of 38 per cent. Also MUL's Gypsy and sports utility vehicle Vitara saw a rise of 31 per cent to 406 units.In April 2004, HSCIL sold 2,793 units in April over 1,285 units in the same month of last year. It posted a 63.1 per cent rise in sales at 21,703 units last fiscal. The company manufactures sedans, City and Accord, at its facility on the outskirts of Delhi and imports sports utility vehicle CR-V.

Honda ended the last fiscal with an impressive sales growth of 63.1 per cent. The company sold a total of 21,703 units of its models against 13,300 units sold during 2002-03.

Hero Honda Motors said its sales surged 46 per cent to 1.96 lakh units in April over 1.34 lakh units in the same month last year.

The entry-level motorcycle CD-Dawn crossed five-lakh units mark since its launch 13 months ago.
