Shimoga
By Our Special Correspondent
Workers taking out a procession in Shimoga on Saturday to mark May Day.
SHIMOGA, MAY 1. Workers belonging to different labour unions observed May Day here on Saturday by taking out a procession. The procession culminated in a public meeting where the speakers criticised the exploitation of workers and called upon them to be prepared to fight against injustice. Speaking as the chief guest, G.S. Nagaraj said the workers should unite to fight against injustice. Shivashankar of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) noted that the woes of the working class had increased as a consequence of liberalisation, privatisation, and globalisation. The expectation that the working conditions would improve with the entry of multinational companies had been belied, he said. Y.H. Nagaraj of the Janata Dal (Secular) said the closure of several industries in Shimoga city had affected the labourers. He called for concerted efforts to revive the sick industries. Workers should be treated with love and affection, he said. Referring to the low rate of literacy among industrial workers, particularly porters, he suggested that they be brought under the purview of the adult literacy programme. Mr. Nagaraj suggested that a "Karmik Nagar" be set up in the city with all basic amenities for industrial workers to help them lead a decent life. Manjunath, a lecturer from Bhadravati, and Papa Sab of the Hamali Sangha spoke on the occasion.
