ERODE, MAY 1. Self-financing institutions should not commercialise education, the Vice-Chancellor of Bharathiar University, S. Sivasubramanian, has said. Inaugurating the Educational Guidance and Exhibition, organised by the Sri Rangasamy Educational Trust, sponsored by Rotary Club of Erode Cosmos and Rotary Club of Komarapalayam, here today, exhorted students to actively participate in extra curricular activities like sports, NCC and NSS, as overall development of skills was imperative to compete in a global scenario. Information Technology still had global recognition, IT students were the sought-after by many firms at the international level. Presiding over the meeting, the Correspondent of the Erode Sengunthar Engineering College, J. Sudhanandhen, said that as at least 75, 000 engineers graduated every year and providing them employment was a challenge. To emerge successful in such a scenario, students must equip themselves well and not be dependent on Government alone. The president of the Association of Self Financing Private Engineering Colleges in Tamil Nadu, P.V. Ravi, said that the introduction of self-financing colleges in Tamil Nadu had benefited lakhs of students. According to the WTO agreement, a new type of educational system would be introduced by other countries in India from 2005, and hence the self financing institutions should impart quality education to compete with them. The Chairman of Maharaja group of Colleges, K. Paramasivam, the Chairman of SSM College, M.S. Mathivanan, the Correspondent of Kongu Arts and Science College, A.V. Kumarasamy, the Trust Secretary of Kongu Vellalar Institute of Technology, D. Venkateshwararan, and the Secretary of Muthayammal Educational Institutions, K.P. Ramasamy, spoke. The exhibition would conclude on May 3.
