Civic body gears up to meet water demand

By Our Staff Reporter

GUNTUR, MAY 1. The Guntur Municipal Corporation (GMC) is confident of supplying 14 million gallons per day against a demand of 16 mgd by making arrangements for pumping water into the existing pipeline from the Prakasam Barrage.

The Mayor, Chukka Yesuratnam, said on Saturday that a Rs. 25-lakh work sanctioned for digging a channel from the suction point to the sump would be taken up on Monday and will be completed in a week. The Municipal Commissioner, D. Rama Rao, said that water would be stored in the Guntur Channel for one week till the channel was dug and later pumping would be taken up with the help of three 125 hp motors. The water level at the suction point would fall from the existing 17 mts to 13 mts and it would remain so till the repairs to the barrage were completed in three months time. The GMC had taken up repair of borewells and replaced damaged public taps to save water, Mr. Rama Rao said.

The GMC also proposes to repair some of the pipelines in the outskirts to make drinking water available to as many people as possible and supply through tankers wherever needed. An action plan for hiring of tankers has been made depending on the need, he added.

Meanwhile, the residents of Gorantla panchayat have decided to take out a rally to the panchayat office on Monday, demanding immediate implementation of the protected water scheme that would bring drinking water to the panchayat from the GMC. The residents would also organise a dharna in front of the Collector's Office.
