Rectified spirit seized

By Our Staff Reporter

PONDICHERRY, MAY 1. The Excise department today seized around 4,000 litres of rectified spirit worth Rs. 6 lakhs from a house at Aranganur in the Bahoor constituency, according to the Deputy Commissioner, R. Anbalagan.

A team detected 81 plastic containers each containing 50 litres of spirit from the house. The house-owner was absconding. His manager, R. Viswanathan of Seliamedu, was arrested.

Mr. Anbalagan said the department had intensified steps to prevent hoarding and smuggling of arrack to ensure free and fair Lok Sabha poll in the Union Territory. Instructions had been issued to officers to keep vigil on areas prone to hoarding, illicit distillation and smuggling of arrack.

He said that on a tip-off, a team rushed to Madukarai on the Tamil Nadu border on Friday. During a search operation, 1,600 litres of rectified spirit kept in plastic containers in a pump shed were unearthed.

The team also found plastic containers with the spirit in another hut. Investigations were on.
