Pondicherry

PONDICHERRY, MAY 1. The Dalit Panthers of India leader, Thol. Tirumavalavan, today urged the Election Commission to videograph all booths on the day of election (May 10) in Chidambaram and other constituencies where the Pattali Makkal Katchi was contesting. Addressing newsmen here, he apprehended booth capturing and bogus voting by the PMK. He alleged that the PMK founder-leader, S. Ramadoss, was under the impression that by obstructing Dalit voters from exercising their franchise, the PMK could win the poll. He said the Pondicherry-based Vanniar Munnetra Kazhagam had pledged its support to the candidates fielded by the People's Alliance. The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam was opposing only the Bharatiya Janata Party and not its fanatic policies. He described opportunism by the DMK, the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and the PMK to work out a pact for the Lok Sabha poll after having hobnobbed with the BJP for nearly four and half years and shared power with it at the Centre. He also criticised the combine led by the All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam. Mr. Tirumavalavan appealed to the electorate to back the DPI candidate, K. Sozha Nambiar, in Pondicherry. R. Vanangamudi, convener, Pondicherry DPI, said the Congress Government here had failed the Dalits. He alleged that funds earmarked in the Budget under special component plan were diverted to other schemes depriving the Scheduled Caste of the opportunities.
