PONDICHERRY, MAY 1. Constituents of the Democratic Progressive Alliance today staged a picketing here demanding free treatment for patients in the Central Government-run Siddha Research Centre. The Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly, R.V. Janakiraman (Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam), who led the protest, said the Union Territory Administration, realising the importance of indigenous systems of medicine, provided a site to the management of the research centre to establish its unit at Kuyvarpalayam in the Nellithope Assembly constituency. But, the Union Health Ministry had directed the research centre to collect fees from patients from today. Leaders and volunteers of the DMK, the Pattali Makkal Katchi, the Congress protested against the fee system and wanted continuation of the free service.
