CHENNAI, MAY 1. The Election Commissioner, N.Gopalaswami, today said that the Election Commission would examine a request of parties in the State to delete a few approved alternative documents for establishing identity in the booth. At a meeting with Election Commissioners at the Raj Bhavan here, Opposition parties demanded that identity cards issued by private firms and any form of revenue records should not be allowed. Noting that the Village Administrative Officer's certificate would no longer be allowed as a identity card, Mr. Gopalaswami said: "There are other certificates on which political parties have expressed apprehension. We will think it over whether those need to continue or not." The EC approved 14 alternative documents for establishing the identity of voter instead of the earlier 16. The following are the alternative documents for establishing the elector's identity: (1) passport (2) driving licence (3) income tax identity (PAN) cards 4) service identity cards issued to its employees by State/Central Government, Public Sector undertakings, local bodies or private industrial houses (5) bank/Kisan/post office passbooks (accounts opened on or before March 31, 2004), (6) student identity cards issued by recognised educational institutions on or before March 31, 2004, (7) property documents such as pattas, registered deeds (8) ration cards issued on or before March 31, 2004 (9) SC/ST/OBC certificates issued by competent authority on or before March 31, 2004 (10) pension documents such as ex-servicemen's pension book/pension payment order, ex-servicemen's widow/dependent certificates, old age pension order, widow pension order (11) railway identification cards (12) freedom fighters identity cards, (13) arms licences and (14) certificate of physical handicap by competent authority issued on or before March 31, 2004. B.B.Tandon, Election Commissioner, said that the State achieved 72 per cent coverage in issuing photo identity cards.
