TIRUPATI, MAY 1. Red flags were hoisted at street corners in the town on Saturday when May Day was celebrated by labourers. Trade unions held processions, amid slogan-shouting on the need for unity among workers. The All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) State secretary, B.Tulasendra, urged workers to unite to fight the twin menace of globalisation and privatisation. Speaking after hoisting the flag at Gandhamaneni Sivaiah Bhavan, the CPI district secretary, P.Harinadha Reddy, exhorted workers to fight against `anti-worker' Governments. At the CPI(M) office, the district secretary, K.Murali, said it was time for the working classes to launch a movement to regain their rights. The Independent Trade Union Council (ITUC), a breakaway group of the CITU, hoisted its flag in which loading and unloading workers (hamalis) took part. NELLORE: May Day was celebrated in Nellore on Saturday. Colourful festoons and banners were erected at major centres and processions were taken out on the occasion. The Day was also celebrated at the Central. KURNOOL: The District Revenue Officer, Laxmikantham, administered an oath against child labour in connection with the May Day celebrations here on Saturday.
