Student volunteers to chip in for parties

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, MAY 1. They may be done with their annual academic examinations, but for student volunteers of political parties, it's not the time to holiday just as yet. With most political parties issuing a SOS asking student volunteers to add extra zing to campaigns by reaching out to young voters, those eager to take a break will have to wait till the last phase of the Lok Sabha elections come to a close with polling on May 10.

With student workers playing an important role in mobilisation of votes during elections, major political parties are banking on them to not only woo young voters but also for managing the basic campaign work. "We have been issued a summon of sorts saying no student worker will go on a holiday till May 10 when polling comes to a close. A lot of our college volunteers, specially those living in hostels, go home after their examinations, but with this order now, everyone is at work,'' a member of the Congress frontal organisation National Students Union of India (NSUI) revealed.

The NSUI, on its part launched a new campaign Yuva Chetna Yojna on Friday to cash in on the votes of the young brigade. Aimed at reaching out to the campuses as well as residential areas of Delhi Uttar Pradesh and Haryana, the campaign, the NSUI believes, will help the Congress in turning the tide in their favour in seats where they have a close fight.
