ITC files defamation suit

KOLKATA, MAY 1. Tobacco major, ITC Limited, and its Chairman Y. C. Deveshwar, have jointly filed a Rs. 550 crore defamation suit against Ananda Bazar Patrika and its Editor.

The suit, considered to be the highest damages claim from an Indian media house, was filed last week in the Calcutta High Court.

The ITC spokesperson, S. H. Venkatramani, told PTI that the suit had been filed following an article in Ananda Bazar Patrika's English newspaper, The Telegraph, dated April 10, 2004.

The article relating to the fee controversy involving the Indian Institute of Management, Kolkata, of which Mr. Deveshwar is the Chairman, was published under the headlines "Smoke gets in his eyes."

He said the company had claimed damages of Rs.500 crores and the Chairman Rs. 50 crores.

The suit also sought an injunction to restrain the paper from publishing any news item relating to the company and its Chairman, which affected the goodwill and business reputation of ITC. It also alleged that the article, besides damaging the image of the company in the eyes of the general public at large, had created confusion among its shareholders.
