Clean sweep by Madras

DINDIGUL, MAY 1. Madras, as expected, retained all the eight team titles in the Tamil Nadu State inter-district table tennis championships conducted by Dindigul District Table Tennis Association at Akshya Vidyalaya Indoor stadium here on Saturday.

There was absolutely no fight from the mofussil districts as Madras fielded only top ranked players in all categories. However, Rippu Gupta of Madurai had the distinction of a win against State No.4, K. Aishwarya of Madras in the women's final.

Another player who showed promise was Lalitha Priya of Salem, who gave Salem when she defeated State No. 2 Sumana R. Krishnan in the first match in the cadet girls' final.

Host Dindigul had the consolation of finishing runner-up to Madras in the sub-junior boys' category, with a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Madurai in the semifinals.

Madurai, which finished runner-up in four categories last year, finished runner-up in only three categories and Salem finished runner-up in two categories.

The results: Men's final: Madras beat Thiruvallur 3-0. (A. Rajathkamal bt B. Madankumar 11-7, 11-9, 11-8; M. Surjit Kumar bt A. Devaraj 13-11, 11-5, 11-1; R. Abishek bt Jananthanan 12-10, 10-12, 11-5, 11-9). Semifinals: Madras bt Madurai 3-0; Thiruvallur bt Erode 3-1.

Junior boys' final: Madras bt Madurai 3-0 (R.S. Raja bt R. Pradeep 11-5, 11-6, 11-7; M. Subash bt G. Ananth 13-11, 11-7, 11-5; Tarun J. George bt P.S. Senthil 11-1, 11-5, 11-4). Semifinals: Madras bt Vellore 3-0; Madura bt Nilgiris 3-0.

Sub-junior boys' final: Madras bt Dindigul 3-0 (S. Prasanna bt Vignesh 7-11, 12-10, 14-12, 13-11; E. Prabhakaran bt Mugesh 11-5, 11-6, 12-10; P. Karthik bt Kishore 11-4, 11-6, 11-6). Semifinals: Madras bt Salem 3-0; Dindigul bt Madurai 3-2.

Cadet boys' final: Madras bt Madurai 3-0 (C. Pradeep Chander bt M. Mukund 11-5,11-6, 11-3; G. Sathiyan bt M. Royan 11-6, 11-4, 11-5; R. Venkataraman bt M. John 11-7, 11-7, 11-3). Semifinals: Madras bt Cuddalore 3-0; Madurai bt Krishnagiri 3-0.

Women's final: Madras bt Madurai 3-1 (K. Shamini bt T. Edwin 11-4, 11-2, 11-6; K. Aishwarya lost to R. Rippu Gupta 7-11, 11-3, 7-11, 12-14; S. Jhansi Rani bt S. Preethi 11-7, 11-6, 11-3; Shamini bt Rippu 11-9, 8-11, 11-6, 11-5). Semifinals: Madras bt Salem 3-0; Madurai bt Thiruvallur 3-0.

Junior girls' final: Madras bt Salem 3-0 (B. Jalaja bt C. Kavya 11-6, 8-11, 9-11, 11-9, 11-6; A. Nivedita bt R. Madhumitha 11-4, 10-12, 11-3, 11-7; S. Nirupama bt L. Sandhya 11-2, 11-7, 11-9). Semifinals: Madras bt Madurai 3-0; Salem bt Trichy 3-0.

Sub-junior girls' final: Madras bt Kanyakumari 3-0 (Swetha Kumaravel bt G. Rajeshwari 11-6, 13-11, 11-9; D.V. Sneha bt Salomi 11-4, 11-9, 11-8; M. Surekha bt B.J. Joji 11-5, 11-7, 11-7). Semifinals: Madras bt Salem 3-0; Kanyakumari bt Madura 3-0.

Cadet girls' final: Madras bt Salem 3-1 (Sumana R. Krishnan lost to R. Lalitha Priya 6-11, 10-12, 11-3, 13-11, 6-11; K.K. Narmada bt S. Krithika 9-11, 11-8, 11-3, 11-4; N. Vidya bt G. Jayashree 11-6, 11-8, 11-4; K.K. Narmada bt R. Lalitha Priya 13-11, 10-12, 14-12, 12-10). Semifinals: Madras bt Cuddalore 3-0; Salem bt Kancheepuram 3-0.
