Gopal outwits Susmitha

VIJAYAWADA, MAY 1. Top-seeded K.N. Gopal of Andhra Bank (ELO 2230) got the better of T. Susmitha of Champions Chess Academy, in the first round game of the 42nd Andhra Chess Championship, which began at Viswabharati High School here on Saturday.

In Ruy Lopez variation, the favourite sacrificed a knight on the 13th move, captured the rook and wrapped up the game in 26 moves

In another match, World under-10 silver medallist, S. Raviteja, outwitted G.J. Sarma in King's Indian Defence.

In the Andhra championship for girls (under-15 years), under-7 National champion K. Sai Nirupama of Ongole started off on a winning note, defeating U. Sindhura of Gudivada in 32 moves.

Top-seeded G. Sirisha of Champions Chess Academy also scored an easy win over D.N. Kiranmayi of Gudivada in 26 moves. In another first round game, K.S. Ratna Manikyam of Vizag struggled to down unseeded N. Alekhya.

Grandmaster P. Harikrishna inaugurated the event.
