Main task now is to dislodge NDA: Raja

By Our Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, MAY 1. The CPI national secretary, D. Raja, has said that the central task before the Opposition parties now is to dislodge the NDA Government.

Mr. Raja, in Kerala to campaign for the LDF candidates for the Lok Sabha poll, said that no option on formation of an alternative Government could be ruled out now. Third Front, he said, was an option that could be looked at, but that would have to be done on the basis of the actual strength of the parties after the poll.

The CPI leader said the Prime Minister, A. B. Vajpayee's call for a vote for stability was nothing but a ploy to cover up the deep crisis into which the NDA had fallen. It would not sway the common people whose problems remained unresolved. The crash of the Sensex following publication of exit poll results suggesting setbacks for the BJP only showed whose interest the NDA Government represented. The ordinary people were worried more about their survival and not about the crash of the Sensex, he said.

He accused the NDA Government of having turned India into a colony of multinational corporations and said the task before any alternative Government would be to free the country from such a yoke.

Mr. Raja said the effort of the Opposition should be to forge a secular democratic alternative to the NDA based on the principles of secular democracy, federalism and self-reliant economic growth with social justice. It was clear that the Congress would not be able to form a Government of its own and would need the support of the other Left and secular parties to do so. For this, it would have to amend its economic policies radically. The Congress, which claimed credit for the gains of economic reforms, should also own up responsibility for its adverse effects, he added.
