NEW DELHI, MAY 1. The ban on smoking at public places, including railway premises and in trains, direct or indirect advertising of all tobacco products and their sale comes into effect from today across the country. The commonly-used tobacco products are pan masala, zarda and gutka. The ban has been imposed under the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products (Prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade and Commerce, Production, Supply and Distribution) Act, 2003. Any violation of the Act will attract a fine of Rs. 200. As per the Act, smoking in trains, buses or any other mode of public transport; closed spaces such as waiting rooms and restaurants; and all Government buildings is prohibited. The sale of cigarette or tobacco products to persons below the age of 18 will not be allowed.
