EC show-cause to Pondy AIAMDK

By J. Venkatesan

NEW DELHI, MAY 1. The Election Commission today issued a show-cause notice to the All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), asking why the recognition of its Pondicherry unit might not be suspended or withdrawn for violation of the model code of conduct and the EC's instructions.

The EC, in its order, said A. Anbalagan, AIADMK MLA, and other workers in the Union Territory had "wilfully violated the model code of conduct and the lawful directions," erecting cut-outs and banners and defacing public property on the eve of the party supremo and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa's visit. The notice has been issued to the Pondicherry unit general secretary, asking him to explain within seven days.

The EC said that initially an explanation was sought from the party leaders on the code violation. But in their reply, the party and the leaders failed to satisfy the Chief Electoral Officer of the Union Territory and hence action under Section 16 of the Symbol (Reservation and Allotment) order, 1968 was taken.
